We Are Back

Well it has been a long time since our last posting. I have been most neglect in keeping everyone up to speed on our munchkin. So much has happened, yet it seems it was just yesterday we brought her home. We celebrated "Gotcha Day" at Build a Bear with her good buddies and our close friends. Amazingly, they (Build a Bear) are quite aware of Gotcha Day, the significance of the event, and importance of caring for families with blessed little ones. I pray this is not unique to our store as it really was pretty cool. We celebrated "Adoption Recognition" with our Sunday School class and family. We have been most blessed to have a group of parents that have either adopted, been adopted themselves or are in the process of adoption. This was a glorious day, fun games, food and a toast to our children for making us whole. Afterwards, Deena was told she has moved from being Nene (her nickname) to Gracie's Mom by the other little "girls" in the group. If you could only imagine how that makes your heart swell, and touches your soul, in that the identity we strive so hard to achieve sometimes is seen so clearly by those little people. We celebrated the graduation/birthday & engagement of our nephew and took our first swim of the year in "Uncle Daves" pool (just how white can Dad be??). As the celebrations continue, we spent Memorial Day at Mom & Dad's, eating Dad's BBQ chicken, jumping in the bounce house, playing dodge the bomb bags (thanks Mom) and shooting each other with silly string (thanks Mom again). I am not sure who has a bigger time with this. Lets don't forget the "pinata's" as we had 4 this year. Gracie is beginning to put sentences together, use them in the right context, and at the right time. We naturally think think she is the smartest child in the world (she gets it from her mom). She loves music and loves again to spend time in her big bubbas room listening to something he refers to as just that. I will certainly debate that issue but do not want to break the moment of bonding that does not come often between a 22 month old (today), and an 18 year old. Deena and Gracie have a worship cd they are fond of listening to. It has Hill Songs "Mighty to Save" on it. As soon as the intro begins Gracie will raise her arms in the air, praising God, and it is hard sometimes not to pull over and cry because of the beauty and innocense of the child, and the moment. Well it is getting late and I am rambling a bit. Promise to post more and more often but for now, later.

p.s.- if you get a chance listen to the words of the Hill Songs "Mighty to Save", because He Is..

Dedication Sunday, First Ranger Game and more

As one could only imagine, so much has happened since the last entry. It is so much fun recording the "firsts" on everything with this "little" person we cherish and adore. Our church went to the ballpark to attend a Mercy Me Concert and catch a Ranger Game. What an awesome day spent with a few thousand close friends all worshipping and singing than venturing into the stadium to watch the Rangers actually win a game. Of all the events that have recently taken place, the most special was Child Dedication Sunday. This was a day where we as parents, family and church pledged our babies to our Lord. Where we as parents and a congregation promised to raise our children in homes where the focus is on our God. How we have been blessed by these babies and take the responsibility of living and leading a Spirit filled life as we raise these very special ones God has entrusted to us. The words of our Dedication are included:
Dear Gracie Marie Ming Coon,
On this day of Dedication, Mommie and I find ourselves the ones who are truly blessed. Our promise is to love you, to care for you, to provide for your needs and raise you in a home that is full of grace, mercy and the warmth that only our God can provide. We waited so long for you, and when God presented us with this "little perfect person" we realized our lives would never be the same nor would we want them to be. Our role as parents is one we do not take lightly. God has entrusted us to show you what life is like as we continually strive to be more Christ like. At the same time we lean heavily on our sons, our family, our church famliy and church to help raise you and step in where we may fail. Gracie Marie Ming Coon, we dedicate you today to the one who placed you in our hearts and arms. May God's unfailing love rest upon us now and all the days to come.
Mommie and Daddy
Praise God, Praise God, yee haw Praise God!! What a day that was. Moving through the pictures now, Gracie's "Big Sis" Sidney had her 4th Birthday and we got to ride the Merry-Go-Round for the first time. I still can not figure out how Gracie's horse always came in first though. Lastly, Gracie rounds out the photos showing what a huge Red Raider fan she is. This makes her Aunt Julayne, Uncle Wendell & Aunt Laura, Uncle Bret, Uncle Dave, me and Molly quite happy.
Our lives are so different now, and we would not change anything about what has happened. Deena and I ask each other if we remember what life was like before Gracie got here, and we can not. She has always been with us and we have always loved her.
God is good!
Until next time.

Gracie's Birthday - God's Wisdom

So much has happened since the last posting. Ironically, one of the most important being Gracies first birthday and we have no pictures as of yet. Actually we celebrated both Gracie's and Deena's birthdays on the same day as they are only 5 days apart. Needless to say it was quite the extravaganza and Dad made the cake. It was an artistic masterpiece shaped into the figure of the number "1". Too bad we don't have any pictures as it was something to behold. We began a tradition on that day as well, an idea Pastor Chris and Kim Haughee shared with us, about lighting a candle on Gracies birthday for the "birthmother". We lit a table candle as Deena read a poem by Tom Fisher. When the poem was finished, we asked for everyone to celebrate the life that this wonderful and courageous woman brought into the world by lighting a candle. In a room of probably 40 people, everyone lit a candle originating from the "birthmother wick". It was a pretty powerful moment to see all the faces and feel the moment as we all celebrated the birth of "our" Gracie and prayed for the mother who had to let her baby go. The poem is called, "A Mother Love".

"She left you one morning, she had no choice, in a country of millions, she had just one voice.

The law made it clear, one child would do, to obey it would mean no hope for you.

As she laid you down her eyes became blurried, on saying goodbye said don't you worry.

Another will come to take my place, a mother will come from a different race.

She'll hold you and love you as if you're her own, she'll take you away to a brand new home.

She then ran away her heart broke in two, don't ever forget of my love for you."

It is hard to imagine that out of such a tragic moment in time our lives were changed forever and we became blessed beyond belief. God is funny like that. Deena and I cry together for her birthmother and how we have come to love this little person so much over the last few months. Our hearts break when we look in to the eyes of "our" Gracie and grieve for the one who left her, praying herself that she would be found and ultimately life and tomorrows would be given to her by someone other than herself. Her being in our lives for the short amount of time she has been, I could not give her up. Above is a random sampling of photos over the last few weeks and months. The one on top is Deena, Gracie and Amanda. Amanda is Gracie's big sister whose birthday we celebrated in July. She was our first daughter we share time, love and memories with in a very special way. There is a new family photo with Gracie and her brothers, not to mention Mom & Dad. The others are of the little princess herself. Well more later, and as has become the norm, you never know when "Later" will be.

Rick

P.S. - Happy Birthday Lily (Gracie's crib mate from Hunan).

Bloggers Block

Hey everyone, did you thinkI was on vacation? All I can attribute my lack of writting to is Bloggers Block. I would make up some huge excuse about being busy and time issues but that is just what it would be, an excuse. Needless to say, a lot has happened since the last posting. The 4th of July has come and gone, the flooding rains have ceased and we are now grumbling about having to water our lawns again, the cooler weather that the rains brought has changed to full fledge SUMMER, and best for last the "Sno-Cone" Stand is in full swing. Gracie has been treated to her first summer right of passage and that is the Rainbow Snowcone. She does not quite know what to do with the cold part but she loves the flavor. She pretty much eats all "human" food now with the occassional jar of Baby Food as we empty out the pantry and they are a little easier at lunch. It is hard to believe that we have been home only two months. I do not remember what life was like before she got here. We have fallen so deeply and completely in love with this little person. Deena and Aunt Tabbie are teaching Gracie sign. She can now tell us "more, that she is full, thank you, please and I Love You". She is great at blowing kisses, and as you can see from the pictures above loves to play peep-eye. She took her first Pony Ride at her Auny Lisa's house on the 4th and was more than able to stay in the saddle. We have discovered that breakfast is not her favorite meal of the day ( takes after her Mom) and from all indicators she will be saying her brother Matt's name first. It is quite sight to see when you walk into our kitchen and she is surrounded by all three of our Lab's as she drops Cheerios one by one into their mouths. This I can only assume as her gentle servants nature and willingness to share. She loves to play on the floor and to date has not been stepped on by dog or human, Praise God for that. Deena says she is just going to begin walking and skip crawling as she shows little or no interest in doing it. We are making arrangements for the big number 1 Birthday that comes up on August 1st. Deena's is the 6th so I think we will celebrate at least for the early years these dates together. Since being home we think she has met most of the family and close friends on both sides. One of the big highlights of the day is bathtime. She absolutely loves bathtime and I do have to admit the toys are a lot cooler than what we had growing up. She loves music and this was noted her adoption paperwork notes from the orphanage. She loves to sing in Church and every now and then she will shout out an "Amen Preacher" (or at least thats what we think she is saying). Imagine a Chinese Southern Baptist in a Bible Church and thats her. Well I promise I will update more often and oh yea, by the way if you just so happen to ask her "How much do you love Grandma", she will spread her arms as far as they will go and grin from ear to ear.
to be continued......................

Fathersday & More

Post-Father's Day Greetings everyone!!!
I had every intention of updating the site on Sunday evening but we were all too full and tired. What a wonderful day of firsts for the Benjamin-Coon Clans as we spent our first Father's Day with "The Little Princess". The first part of the day began at Church as we were blessed with a sermon on Humility. (I find it so very hard to believe that on a day like Father's Day our Pastor would preach on a topic to pick on me. I need to speak to him about that.) Afterwards we hurried home to begin a day of "Meat-Festing" with ribs and pork chops, followed by bratwurst and lamb rolls. Needless to say it was a "Man's Day". I think there was other food there too but, did I say there was meat! (Brian Elkins is shaking his head right now!) Moving on, the week leading up to the big event was blessed. On Thursday night we had the opportunity to take a family photo, bottom right, in our backyard. This was a huge part of my gift but also what we shared with our families. It was such a blessing. A little about all the photo's. The top picture is one of Gracie's protector. This is our girl Lab "Fred". Now before everyone goes Fred, it is short for Fredrica von Hauptfogel of Dresden. The very famous Labrador Retriever that saved the Prussian Queen from drowning in the 1600th Century. The story goes that the Queen had too much to drink one night and fell from a party boat into the friged waters of the Schlimdorf River. The current was too swift and waters too cold for anyone to follow the Queen but Fredrica. Fred being the protector she was than and still is today by bloodline, jumped in and pulled the Queen to safety and they lived happily ever after. In reality we already had the name Fred picked out and the gender of the dog was not going to matter. The second photo is of Gracie with her Grandpa. This is Deena's Dad Ben. He would fill a whole blog page if I got started. What a man and what an example to follow on what it is to be a Father. He is quite a guy. The next picture is titled "How cute do I look in my carseat". Two things happen in this device, one is she falls asleep and the second is she poops everytime she gets in it. I think we are planning on moving it to the bathroom. We are so fortunate that it is covered with some type of coating they perfected at NASA. Next is Gracie falling asleep in her Aunt Denise's lap as the day was winding down and finally our family photo again. I will add more later but need to get ready for work. Happy Post Father's Day everyone. Enjoy the pictures and remember "As we have been blessed, let us bless others".

It is hard to believe that tonight we have been home two full weeks. That is at Mid-Night we will be home two full weeks! Gracie has adjusted so well. When we really think about it God orchestrated this whole "family" thing from the beginning, so whats the big surprise! Silly people. One thing is certain and that is we love this little girl more and more each passing day. As you can see Mommie is constantly changing her clothes and taking pictures. I am so glad that we have gone digital as 35mm would put us into a second mortgage. The picture of her wall has a new addition. Lt. Mike (or Uncle Mike as he signs his work) painted Deena's heart statement "Dance Like No One Is Watching". The freedom to be one's self. It brings to mind David as he danced before the Ark of the Covenant, uninhibited and unafraid of who was watching. She can do that now. I cry however to think that there are others from her orphanage who may not get the chance to express this unfailing joy. God is so good! Fathers Day is rapidly approaching and I want to wish the Fathers in our group a very Happy Fathers Day. Happy Fathers Day Chris as you enjoy your Lily. May she grow to appreciate the humor you bring to every situation and know the special calling God has placed on your heart as a Minister. Happy Fathers Day to Brian as you enjoy your Faith. May she grow to appreciate the committment that is required of a Physician to care for many and still make time for your own family (they are the best Doctors by the way). Happy Fathers Day to Jeff as you enjoy your Kori. May she grow to appreciate the strength behind the quiet demeanor and recognize the mischevious look behind the eyes of Dad. Lastly Happy Fathers Day to John as you enjoy your Danielle. May she grow to appreciate the love and honesty we see in you when you look into her face. Well I am about out of steam for the evening. For some unknown reason Gracie is waking up about 4:00 and wants to play. The difficult part is that when we go in there with the best of intentions of getting her back to sleep, when she smiles at us we are so hooked our thoughts go to "Let the Games Begin"! Yee Ha! Praise God! (Thank you Bret for allowing me to borrow that saying.)

Post Memorial Day Greetings

Memorial Day is a big deal in our family. It is the only time during the year that we get to taste Grandpa's Bar-B-Q Chicken. There are a lot of cooks out there, I happen to think that I am a pretty good one, but there is just something about Grandpa's "Chicken". We as a family have a very special place in our hearts for Memorial Day. Both our fathers (Deena and myself) served in the Navy, our oldest son was in the Navy, we still have a nephew who will make a career out of Submarines and our Sister in Laws brother is an Admiral. It is quite humbling to think that we are able to have an open picnic and even worship the way that we do because of the people who serve and have gone before us to insure our freedoms. The little princess was a huge hit as she was passed from Aunt and Uncle to cousin to Grandma to Grandpa and back to Mom and Dad. She made her first swipes at the ever important "Pinata" and finally to be given lessons in technique by big brother Matt. Moving on, she had her first Doctors check up yesterday and all in all passed with flying colors. They made an attempt to draw blood for tests and this was quite an ordeal. I could not do that on a regular basis as a nurse or doctor, even with the best of intentions in mind because it is just not any fun for anyone involved. After all the attempts and the sticks she was only able to produce one vial of blood so I think we are in for another round of "Blood-Letting" at some point. There were a lot of tears on everyones part. We are so blessed to have a Doctor that is going through the Adoption process and they have chosen China. She understands our concerns, she reassures us about Mongolian Spot and shares in the blessing of Gracie. She also happens to be Matthew's Doctor so she knows us pretty well. If she would see humans I would go to her!! Well I need to get ready to go to work. I think the Jet-Lag has pretty much gone by the way side as each of us had a day that we completely melted down this last week. More later! Oh and by the way she has cut two teeth, went on a semi-successful "adventure" yesterday in her running stroller and will be exposed to her first trip to Costco tonight! Life is good. On a serious note, please keep our birth mothers in your prayers, the nation of China, our missionaries and all the adoption workers and caregivers of these precious gifts from God. We are still the ones who have been blessed as the daily caos turns to praises of joy when we look into the eyes of our beautiful daughters. Now really, more later!!

Welcome Home & Memorial Day

It has been days since we updated our site. There are a lot of reasons for this probably the most relevant being readjusting to home and all. Our trip home was a trying one to say the least. Due to complications with another one of our families in Hong Kong, we were over an hour late leaving and consequently missed our connecting flight out of Chicago to Dallas. Hey, that is travel and especially when one flies overseas. We do not know how the other family made out or when they finally made it home but have been praying they are safe and with family. What a blessing it was however when we did arrive around midnight Wednesday night (original time 7:35 pm) to see family (both biological and church) waiting on us. Everyone was crying and laughing and hugging and kissing! God is so good. Gracie has been and continues to be such a trooper. She was awesome on the flight home and is adjusting to life in TEXAS! By the way did I mention TEXAS!!! We all have a bit of jet lag still and she is beginning to show signs of teething. She also is having some issues with sleep so we are doing our best to accommodate her as we are still getting to know our girl. She is still such a happy baby! Yesterday we went to Church for the first time (for service only, no Sunday School yet) and she was right at home. As long as Mom & Dad are in sight she is fine with others holding her. We have had many visitors too so she is quite the celeb right now. We have made some discoveries too and they are not all good. She does not like being in her car seat, in a grocery cart or in her running stroller. This morning we took her for our first adventure in the stroller and she was not happy. We only made it around the block before Dad made the decision to return to port. It was sprinkling too so maybe she just did not want to mess her hair up with a big day planned at Grandma & Grandpa's. We are to be there at 2:00 for her first Memorial Day Celebration. We will take pictures and do another update tonight. More later as the little princess has just awoken from her morning nap.

Update - Guangzhou

I will try and put thoughts and ideas down that Deena and I have discussed over the last two weeks. This is my attempt to not forget as well. We pray for the biological mothers of these adopted children. It breaks our hearts to look into the eyes of our now forever daughter and think that she was given up. This is a very hard working and proud culture that with just a few changes, and we pray those are coming, huge differences could be made. These children are absolutely beautiful and to think this is just a very small portion that come from state housing. China is a massive mixture of energy, ingenuity, intellect and tradition that goes on and on and on. It is hard to change the direction of a river but, we know of One who parted a sea so we continue to pray for this country. It is almost 10:00 p..m. here in Guangzhou and very early tomorrow morning we leave to come home. We are so ready to begin the long flight but on the same note it is a little bitter sweet as we know there are other "daughters" waiting. We bid two of our adoptive group farewell tonight as our flight plans take us in different directions. We have a very special bond however in that God placed us in this country at the same time to support and love on each other as we make this journey together. Again last night the comment was made to Deena and I that Gracie was a lucky girl. We stated that we were the ones who had been blessed by this. The gentleman went on to say that he understood our thoughts but she would have become one of the forgotten ones and thanked us. Our stay in China has been a wonderful mix of business, adventure and pleasure. Trying to always be mindful that we are guests in the country we could not have been treated any kinder or looked after more thoughtfully. Our Helping Hand representative Susan is an extraordinary individual with a strong faith base, quick wit and iron will to keep us unruly families in check. We will miss her but pray that she remains strong in her calling to shepherd waiting families. After spending almost two weeks with us she is still smiling so it really is a God thing for her. Well got to go to bed as we really do need to get up early and get started. It will be good to hear the words welcome home!!

Day Three - Guangzhou

Well believe it or not the
"cast iron" stomach finally gave
up. Yesterday was not a good
day for Dad. We survived
however and made a cruise
down the Pearl River tonight.
This is the body of water that is just outside our bedroom window. It is responsible for a tremendous amount of commerce in this portion of China. Today Susan, our Helping Hand representative, went to the US Consulate and we received our document stating that Gracie is officially ours. God continues to bless us as we near the final leg of our destination. Tomorrow we go to the US Consulate as the final "official" act in our adoption. The next step is for us to get on our return flight to home. Praise God! As comfortable as they have tried to make this, we are all ready to come home. The photos here are of the hotel where there is an inside waterfall and a huge koi pond. The 3rd picture is Deena in front of a sculpture of "Uncle Dave". It's amazing how having never met him they have his likeness exact. Picture 4 & 5 are of the cruise. Still a bit tired so will attempt to blog more indepth tomorrow. Two days from home!!

Day 1 - Guangzhou

Today was big day as went for our physical check-up here in Guangzhou. She passed with flying colors to no ones surprise as she is a beautiful and healthy baby girl. This is the final health document that will be submitted to the US Consulate on Monday. Due to travel we were unable to update the blog last night. We arrived about 1 1/2 hours late due to weather. All the babies were pretty great even with the late hour and all. Our three families travelled as did 11 other families from Changsha to Guangzhou. It was pretty much a baby flight. We flew on China Southern and it was a very roomy and comfortable hour in the air. We can hardly believe that we are down to the last three full days here in China with us flying out on Wednesday. As has been the case with all of our Hotels this is super. In fact, this is the finest hotel that we have ever been in. It is much busier here however as this is the final stage for all the adoptive parents in China. Needless to say the Hotel is full of Gringo's from all nationalities with adoptive children of all ages. Interestingly, we sat next to a business man from here in Guangzhou and I made the comment to him how blessed we were to have this little person and he looked me in the eyes and said "No, she is the one who is blessed". The Hotel sits on the Pearl River and we can look out our window and see the boats moving up and down the river all day. The White Swan is quite a famous hotel and many celebrities have stayed here. Those include two US President's, Richard Nixon and George W. Bush. Queen Elizabeth has also been a guest. Right now the hotel is quite full of local royalty, our "Asian Princesses". Now to the photos. The top two on the left are from Changsha and are of the Ancient Academy. One was an entrance and the other was the "rock" concert we enjoyed. Picture 3 is Deena and Barbara Elkins of Alexandria, La. She and her husband Brian have adopted a special needs daughter who is absolutely beautiful. This is walking the streets of Guangzhou. Pictures 4 & 5 are of you know who. Believe it or not she is like this about 85% of the time. She is the happiest baby! Tonight we ate American Food at a place called Lucy's Bar & Cafe. A pretty varied menu that served burgers, fries, chicken fingers, enchalades and chips and hot sauce. Tomorrow we venture to another International Church service and I believe we are going for Thai Food. Other than that we have no scheduled activity for the day. I think that Honey has shopping on her mind. Outside our bedroom window on the river tonight there is a Lazer Light Show to Chinese Music. It is a spectacular sight of lights over the water. Well that is enough catching up for now. The local timeis about 9:15 p.m. and when "The Princess" sleeps it's a good idea for everyone to try and rest.

Day Four - Changsha

Okay everyone, this is my
second attempt tonight to update the site. I lost my first message trying to incorporate additional pictures into the mix. Silly, silly me! So, from the top, here we go again. The first two photos are from the HunanEmbroidery Institute from yesterday. As you can hopefully see this is some pretty amazing and wonderful work. I will again try and describe what you are seeing. It is two pieces of cloth, so thin you can not distinguish one from the other, sewn together in mirror images. On one side is the tiger and on the other is the panda. The base fabric is so thin you can see through it! It is impossible to see where one stitch from one end and where the other begins. Picture 3 is Deena, Gracie and I sitting outside the Institute where it is much cooler enjoying the Koi Pond. Picture 4 depicts one of the highlights of our day yesterday and today as we passed school kids getting out for their 2 hour break at 12:00. They were all so happy and friendly each laughing and saying hi! We saw a smaller number of them today as we made it a point to be on the street when they were out. In the last frame is the Little Princess doing her best impression of shooing away the paparazzi! Can't you just hear her saying "Not today, really, I mean it!" You will notice she is flanked by her bodyguards (the rabbit that Matt made for her and the panda mom & dad sent her in her care package to the orphanage). Today was a pretty relaxed day for us in the we had only scheduled event. This afternoon we visited the Yue Lu Ancient Academy Center. This was an institute of higher learning originally attended only by men. This facility dates back to the time of the building of the Great Wall. One thing I have learned is that stuff here is really old! (Looking around, I think that some of these people have underwear as old as the US.) I would encourage anyone to look the facility up on the web as it is most interesting. Upon conclusion of our visit our Helping Hand friend, Susan arranged for us to hear two musical pieces in a small theater on the Ancient Campus. The instruments were a flute and horn, a horizontal harp (much like a dobro) steel bells and slate plates. The tunes were remarkably beautiful. We were told that most Chinese music is for meditation. Obviously they have never listened to Chinese Rap. Yomorrow evening we leave for the final stage of our trip, Guangzhou. Here we will be staying at the famed White Swan and it must really be something if it is going to top the Dolton here in Changsha. More tomorrow. It's late.
